The 11 rules in force since 1 January 2020. The chosen Incoterm determines who — seller or buyer — bears the costs and risks at each step.
| Incoterm | Meaning | Key takeaway |
|---|---|---|
| All modes of transport | ||
| EXW | Ex Works | The buyer bears everything, from the seller's factory. Minimum obligation for the seller. |
| FCA | Free Carrier | The seller delivers to the carrier nominated by the buyer. The most versatile. |
| CPT | Carriage Paid To | The seller pays the carriage; risk passes to the buyer on handover to the first carrier. |
| CIP | Carriage & Insurance Paid To | Like CPT + "all-risks" insurance at the seller's expense. Not used for imports into Algeria (insurance must be local): use CPT. |
| DAP | Delivered At Place | The seller delivers at the agreed place; the buyer clears the goods on import. |
| DPU | Delivered at Place Unloaded | Like DAP, but the seller unloads. Replaces the former DAT. |
| DDP | Delivered Duty Paid | The seller bears everything, including import duties. Maximum obligation. |
| Sea and inland waterway transport only | ||
| FAS | Free Alongside Ship | The seller delivers alongside the vessel at the port of shipment. |
| FOB | Free On Board | Risk passes to the buyer once the goods are on board. The most used in Algeria. |
| CFR | Cost & Freight | The seller pays the freight to the port of arrival; risk passes on board at departure. |
| CIF | Cost, Insurance & Freight | Like CFR + insurance taken out by the seller. Not used for imports into Algeria (insurance must be local): buy CFR and insure with an Algerian company. |
Algeria-specific rule: regulations require imported goods to be insured with a company established in Algeria. Incoterms that include insurance taken out abroad (CIF, CIP) are therefore not used on import — CFR or CPT is preferred, together with local insurance.
Incoterms® is a registered trademark of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). The choice of Incoterm has a direct impact on the customs value and the amount of duties and taxes — our declarants advise you on the rule best suited to your operation.
Together with tariff classification and origin, the customs value is one of the three pillars on which your duties and taxes are calculated. Getting it right secures your operation and avoids reassessments and penalties.
The primary method is the transaction value: the price actually paid or payable for the goods, adjusted to reflect the costs incurred up to the point of entry into Algerian territory. Some elements are added, others are excluded.
When the transaction value cannot be used, the Code applies, in order, five substitute methods:
The chosen Incoterm directly affects the customs value: it determines what is already included in the invoice and what must be added (transport, local insurance). To understand this impact, see our Incoterms section and our Incoterms® 2020 Guide. Our pre-alert study quantifies this value — and therefore your duties and taxes — before you ship.
